NDC to Present Baba Jamal for Ayawaso East By-Election after Probe

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that it would go ahead to present former Ghana High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, as its candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election.

This is despite the establishment of “inappropriate conduct by virtually all the candidates” by an investigation into alleged vote-buying.

Sharing the committee report on the probe on Tuesday, the general secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwerty, said annulment of the election was recommended.

However, he said the committee acknowledged that there are no provisions for annulment in their constitution, plus there is a limited time to a by-election

“First, the party’s constitution does not have a provision for annulment of the election. Two, we are time-bound, so we need to present a candidate tomorrow to the electoral commission, and also, there are legal challenges that could be mounted by whoever won. The party will not clearly be able to go through whatever process to present a candidate very quickly.”

Baba Jamal won the primary on February 7, 2026, with 431 votes.
