NDC to Petition Otumfuo Over Alleged NPP Election Rigging Plot

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has planned to petition the office of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene over alleged plots by the New Patriotic Party to rig the upcoming elections in the Ashanti Region through the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Michael Opoku.

Speaking at a press conference on November 19, the National Communication Officer of the party, Sammy Gyamfi said the King will not be sidelined in this affair since it falls under his jurisdiction and underscored His Majesty’s commitment to peace.

“We are going to ensure that the King of the Ashanti people, who is very much interested in the peace of our nation and the peace of the processes leading to, during, and after the December 7 election, we will officially draw his attention to these developments because the headquarters of the operation of this guy [Brigadier General Michael Opoku] is Kumasi.

“And I know that the Otumfuo cherishes the peace that the people of Kumasi and Ashanti Region enjoy, and he will want to take an interest in this matter and call this guy to order.”

Accusation
Brigadier Opoku is being accused of planning to rig the upcoming election in favour of the ruling party.

According to the opposition party, he plans to leverage his current position to take charge of a “well-crafted scheme that has been designed by the New Patriotic Party to rig the upcoming election, particularly in the Ashanti region, through ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, swapping of pink sheets, and other clandestine activities starting with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2nd”.

“The NDC has received reliable intel to the effect that Brigadier-General Michael Opoku is responsible for the training of NPP thugs at Asutsuare Military camp and other places who he plans to clothe in military apparel to unleash violence on NDC agents and supporters on voting day.”
