NDC Gives Nod for Odododiodioo Parliamentary Primary
The Parliamentary Primary of the Odododiodioo Constituency can now proceed after green light from the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“The FEC further directs its election directorate to take immediate steps to organize the parliamentary primaries for the Odododiodioo Constituency,” it said in a statement on Tuesday.
The decision followed investigations by a special committee whose report was submitted to the FEC on November 28 at its meeting at the Headquarters.
After perusing the report, the FEC decided to disqualify Michael Nii Yarboi, one of the three aspirants from the contest per Article 41 (8) (b) of the constitution of the NDC.
Meanwhile, the Committee has enjoined the remaining two aspirants to pay for the cost of damages caused to properties at their regional office in South La during their vetting.
“That the other two aspirants, Mr Alfred Nii Kotei Ashie and Mr Emmanuel Nii Kotei Ashie whose supporters the Committee’s findings reveal that they caused the damage to properties at the Center of the vetting are hereby surcharged jointly for all the cost of the damage at the centre.”
Apologizing to Miss Akosua Octhere, the journalist who was assaulted during the violence, the Committee announced its decision to absorb her medical bill.
Background
The Primary which was deferred during the general primary of the party in February 2023 due to outstanding issues was scheduled for October 31, however, the vetting of the three aspirants in the leadup on Friday, October 13, 2023 was marred by violence.
Supporters of some of the aspirants stormed the regional office in South La where the vetting was taking place and vandalized some properties at the Office, compelling the FEC to suspend the election.
The thugs assaulted a female journalist in the process.
The three aspirants including, Nii Okai Laryea, Kotey Ashie, and Michael Nii Yarboi Annang, were seeking to replace the incumbent lawmaker Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye who has no plans of re-running.
