My Gov’t will Pay Nananom Living Allowance – Bawumia

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to institute a cost of living allowance for traditional authorities in the country when elected as President in the upcoming elections.

He reckons that the current GHc1,000 paid as an allowance to only Paramount Chiefs is not enough and therefore his decision to institute a cost of living allowance.

This allowance, he said, would not be enjoyed by just Paramount Chiefs but also by Divisional Chiefs and Queens.

Dr Bawumia recognizes that chiefs are powerless under the Chieftaincy Act and is bent on reviewing it to restore some powers to them by rendering changes to Section 63 (d) of the Act.

“We will empower chiefs to help government and to financially resource palaces.”

Another reform he will be rendering includes the codification of succession lines to eradicate disputes as well as the digitalization of land records.

“We will be digitalising all areas of land in the country. This will also help us to eradicate multiple sales of land because all persons trying to buy lands will be able to identify the owner of the land.”

Another collaboration he intends to have with chiefs will be in the fight against illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.

The Vice President met the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs on Monday, June 10, 2024, in Kumasi as part of his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region.
