MTN Reacts to Alleged Withdrawal of Over ₵11k From Customer’s MoMo Wallet

Telecommunication giant MTN Ghana has addressed allegations by a customer to the effect that close to GH₵12,000 was withdrawn from her Mobile Money wallet without any approval.

Contrary to her narrative that the transaction took place without her approval, MTN said she shared her details with a fraudster.

“Our findings suggest that this was a case of social engineering, where a person unknowingly shares sensitive information (i.e., One-Time Password (OTP), One-Time verification link and PIN) with fraudsters.”

It therefore advised others not to indulge in the act, adding that the company was committed to keeping transactions safe, convenient, and secure.

“Never share your PIN or OTP with anyone even someone claiming to be from MTN.”

Background
The young female went viral after she posted a video of herself claiming her wallet had been compromised with funds withdrawn without her consent.

“Somebody has withdrawn GHC11,000 close to GHc12,000 from my Mobile Money account. What did I do? Nothing. Nobody has called me for a transaction ID. Nobody has called me for my Mobile Money PIN so how come?”

She said after reporting to MTN, she was directed to wait for 15 working days before anything could be done about it.
