Monday to be Observed as a Holiday
The country has been directed to observe Monday, August 5 as a statutory public holiday.
A press statement by the Ministry of Interior said the fact that the Founders’ Day holiday falls on the weekend necessitated its extension to the next day by the President.
“The general public is hereby informed that Sunday, 4th August 2024, marks Founders’ Day, which is a statutory public holiday.
“However, in view of the fact that 4th August 2024, falls on a Sunday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, (Act 601) declared Monday, 5th August 2024, as an additional public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”
Founders’ Day is set aside to commemorate the contribution of “the Big Six” to Ghana’s Independence.
It was previously observed on August 21 each year as “Founder’s Day”, commemorating the contribution of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana and the one who led Ghana to independence from colonial rule.
But it was changed by President Akufo-Addo, the current President to “Founders’ Day” to celebrate the five other members of the Big Six as well as all persons who contributed to Ghana’s independence.
