MOMO Agents “Rise Against The Controversial” E-Levy
Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG) has announced its members will hit the streets of Accra over the 1.75% electronic levy.
The group will demonstrate on Thursday, December 23, 2021, at exactly 8 a.m.
Members will mass up at Obra Spot, ply the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and then end at the Parliament House where they will present their petition.
MMAAG is calling on the government to scrap the new policy which will come into force effective January 2021 been approved by the Parliament.
They believe the policy will collapse their jobs.
The controversial E-levy was announced by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta On November 17, 2021.
The levy which will be borne by the sender will reflect on mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments, and inward remittances with a GHc100 threshold.
The levy, according to Mr. Ofori Atta will be used to develop entrepreneurship, youth employment, cyber security, digital, and road infrastructure among others if it is approved by Parliament to come into force on January 1, 2022.
Many have called on the government to scrap that policy, however, the government is bent on “imposing it on the people”.
