Mohammed Polo Slams GPL Quality, Says Only Benjamin Asare Deserves World Cup Spot

Mohammed Polo has voiced his dissatisfaction with the level of the Ghana Premier League, insisting that only Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is good enough to merit a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 1978 AFCON winner, widely celebrated as one of Ghana’s greatest-ever talents, built his legacy at Accra Hearts of Oak before enjoying spells abroad, including a stint with Al Wasl in the UAE.
His comments add fresh weight to the ongoing argument over whether more home-based players should be considered for the national team ahead of the global tournament.
Polo believes the sharp drop in quality across the domestic league is a major concern and noted that even the recent Super Clash in Kumasi lacked the standard expected from top-flight players.
“Apart from Benjamin Asare, no Ghana Premier League player is quality enough to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Polo said to Connect FM.
“The quality of the Ghana Premier League has gone down drastically. I watched the Super Clash the other time and didn’t enjoy it because the players weren’t good enough.
“Despite the red card Hearts of Oak in the game, Asante Kotoko couldn’t create anything significant in the game, and all went down to quality.”
The Black Stars, drawn in Group L with Panama, England and Croatia, continue their preparations with friendlies against Austria, Germany and Mexico, and will be based at Bryant University in the USA for the duration of the World Cup.
