Mohammed Abdul Salam Appointed Acting NLA Boss

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Mohammed Abdul Salam as the acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

The appointment of the Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) took effect on January 15, 2025, and is in accordance with Article 195 (1) of the Constitution and section 45(1) of the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 722).

His appointment is however pending receipt of the Constitutionally required advice of the Board of the Authority, given in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

Meanwhile, the appointment has sparked outrage among some Muslims in the country as the dictates of Islam are against the practice of lottery.

They are therefore urging him to reject the appointment.

“Bra you can’t accept this job for the sake of Allah, and the appointing authority, the Muslim community feels this kind of appointment is a slap to our faith. We plead for a withdrawal of this appointment,” on Muslim wrote on Facebook.

“If the reports are anything to go by then we condemn this appointment. And we will be very disappointed if he accepts the appointment. This is something that was stated clearly in plain language in the Quran: O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and the altars of idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; avoid them, that you may succeed,” another commented.
