Missing ECG Container: NPP Govt Reported 3000 Held Containers Yet There Were 2,500- Jinapor

The Minister for Energy, John Jinapor, says the former government reported approximately 3,000 Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers were being held at the Tema Port during the process of handing over power to his government.
However, upon a visit to the port on assumption of office, he was presented with 2,500 containers, which had incurred a demurrage cost of GHS 1,500,000,000.
In a Facebook post, the Minister responded to criticisms raised over the uncovering of 1,350 missing containers of the ECG at the port.
“Let me set the record straight. During the transition period, the outgoing NPP administration disclosed that approximately 3,000 ECG containers were being held at Tema Harbour due to the inability of ECG to clear them.
“However, upon assuming office, I visited the Tema Harbour and was presented with a different figure of 2,500 containers, which had incurred a demurrage cost of GHS 1,500,000,000.”
He said the discrepancy in figures prompted the establishment of an investigative committee to verify the circumstances surrounding the containers which confirmed that over thousand containers containing cables and other equipment were missing.
“The committee’s report, which was presented to me, confirmed that over 1,300 containers were indeed missing—contrary to the narrative given by the previous administration.”
In response to this, he intends to initiate a criminal investigation immediately, vowing that those found culpable will be prosecuted.
He noted, “Government remains committed to ensuring that such irregularities do not go unpunished.”
