Minority Raises Red Flag on L.I to Ban ‘Yemuadie’
Parliament led by the Rt, Hon Speaker Alban Sumana Kingford Bagbin has suspended the laying of the Legislative Instrument (LI) seeking to restrict or ban the importation of selected products into the country including ‘yemuadie’.
This follows calls by the minority caucus in parliament.
The Minority Leader Hon Ato Forson raised an objection to it.
“The regulation before us is not in the interest of importers and the country. Mr Speaker, we are not going into the details now, but we are requesting the honourable minister responsible for trade and industry to have a meeting so that we can all sit and deal with the issue. Mr Speaker, honestly speaking, I have engaged the majority leader on the matter and I don’t hide my feelings on issues.”
The minority contends that the regulation is not in the best interest of the country.
Hence, the need for Minister for Trade and Industry, Hon K.T Hammond, to further engage the group on concerns surrounding the L.I.
“Truth be told, we have strong exception to the regulation before us, and we believe that we should tread cautiously on the matter,” he further stated.
The Rt Hon Speaker commenting on matter stated, “Leadership try to resolve this matters before we move on, because we are dealing with instrument and you know the import of laying instrument. Definitely laying of an instrument or papers have nothing do with numbers but because of nature of instrument to be laid and constitutional and legal effect of laying.”
Speaker Alban Bagbin urged the sector Minister to deal with concerns relating to the L.I. before it is laid.
