Ministry Of Gender Reacts To Abuse Of Toddler
The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has condemned the abuse of a toddler in a viral video.
The viral video showed a man whipping the toddler with what appeared to be dry palm fonts.
In a press statement, the Ministry Condemned the act as “cruel, inhuman and barbaric”.
It noted that the conduct of the whipper violates the Children’s Act 1998 as well as the Criminal Code of Ghana.
“The Act explicitly states that A person shall not subject a child to torture or any other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment including a cultural practice which dehumanises or is injurious to the physical and mental wellbeing of a child”, it spelt.
“This is a clear violation of the law which is punishable”, it concluded.
It further commended the Ghana Police Service for a bounty it placed on the head of the whipper.
In the one minute eighteen seconds video, the male adult was spotted in a rural setting whipping a toddler with dry palm fonts.
It is unclear what may have triggered that “barbaric” response but his conduct has been widely condemned.
Following the circulation on social media, the Ghana Police service announced it was manhunting for him and pledged an amount of GHc2,000 for anyone who provides a lead for his arrest.
The police as well announced their intentions to rescue the baby.
The Fourth Estate reports that the man has been arrested together with his wife.
They were arrested at Akaa Buem in the Oti region on Wednesday but the man denies any wrongdoing, the media published.
This has, however, not been confirmed by the Ghana Police Service.
