Minister of Information Addresses GJA Concerns Over UTV Attack
The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has addressed concerns raised by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) regarding his ministry’s response to United Television (UTV) attack.
In an interview monitored on Citi Breakfast show by Opemsuo Radio, Oppong Nkrumah asserted that the GJA’s allegations were baseless.
He clarified that his ministry reports information from its monitoring centre and adjusts its stance as more details emerge. He emphasised that their condemnation of such incidents aligns with their consistent responses to attacks on media organisations and journalists.
He stated “My view is that I think we have been consistent, we don’t need to break ranks, we need to put the attention where attention needs to be put [and] that is prosecution and the courts, that we stand together with them and we use them to ensure that there is deterrence.”
This comes after The GJA expressed disappointment with the Ministry’s handling of the recent attack on UTV by alleged NPP members in a statement released on October 8, signed by General Secretary Kofi Yeboah.
They asserted that the Minister had not directly condemned the attack.
The GJA further drew attention to the disparity between the Information Minister’s reaction to the UTV incident and a previous attack on a journalist at Dagbon FM by an NDC activist.
The Ghana Police Service has since arrested a total of 16 individuals in connection with the UTV incident.
