Military Operation In Ashaiman Sanctioned By Military High Command

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that the operation of some military personnel in Ashaiman on Tuesday was backed by the Military high command.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, March 8, GAF said the operation was to “fish out” killers of a military officer in the area and not for vengeance.

On Tuesday, March 7, it was reported that some military personnel besieged the community and brutalised some residents.

Social media was flooded with reports of the “unlawful” conduct of the military, garnering condemnation from a section.

Pictures and videos showed some bruised residents and reported arrest of dozens.

In a statement, the GAF said the action of its personnel was to fish out the killers of one of its personnel.

Death
Imoro Sherrif was killed by a mob in Ashaiman in Accra on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

He was a trooper stationed in Sunyani but was in Accra for a course, GAF confirmed.

The statement from the military said Imoro sought permission to visit his parents in Ashaiman where he grew up during his course.

He “was found in a pool of blood in the early hours of Saturday near the Amania Hotel in Ashaiman”.

Arrest
The “intelligence-led” military swoop on Tuesday was to “fish out the perpetrator of the heinous crime”.

GAF said 184 suspects- aged between 21 and 47 years- were arrested and handed to the military police.

They are scheduled to be handed over to the Ghana Police Service later for screening and further action.

Additionally, the military seized 29 slabs and 57 mini slabs of suspected Indian hemp and amnesia among other forms of narcotics.

Regret
“The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) also wishes to place on record that the swoop was not targeted at innocent civilians but was an intelligence-led operation conducted on suspected hideouts of criminals and crime-prone areas in general”, the statement said.

However, GAF acknowledged that some innocent civilians were affected and communicated its regret.
