Mass SIM Registration Exercise Ends On May 31
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced an end to the mass registration exercise for subscribers across the country after almost three years in session.
Data from the NCA shows that active SIM cards currently stand at 36, 571,256 out of which 25, 448,962 have completed stages one and two of the registration exercise with the Ghana card.
The remaining 11,112,295 are unregistered SIM cards. They have been exempted from deactivation based on various demographics, the Director-General of NCA, Joseph Anokye, revealed during a press briefing on Wednesday, April 26, 2023.
These SIM cards, he said, would be deactivated after May.
There will, however, be exemptions for Ghanaians on national duties outside, foreign diplomats and refugees as well as subscribers who will be able to prove they’ve not been issued a Ghana card.
From June 1, 2023, the Authority said, only new SIM cards will be registered in the country.
Since the beginning of the registration exercise in October 2021, 6,178,452 SIMs have been deactivated.
“They are SIMs that completed stage one but did not complete stage two. “If anyone completes stage one it’s presupposed that they have the Ghana card, began the process but did not do stage two and so they’ve been completely delinked from the system”, Mr Anokye said.
