Management Backs NEDCO Staff Strike After Release of Threatening Audio

Management of Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in Tamale has thrown its support for the sit-down strike of its staff after a “disturbing” audio surfaced yesterday, September 29th, 2021.
According to the Manager for Corporate Communication and Customer Service at NEDCO, Maxwell Kotoka, in-rules were set for staff when they decided to withdraw their services to the community after its residents vandalized some properties at their office on Saturday, nevertheless, a blind eye can’t be turned to the threatening audio.
“What we are talking about is a human life, we are unable to quantify and put it in monetary form. We tried engaging and we made some significant in-rules until very disturbing audio was released yesterday”, he said.
According to the audio, as described by Mr. Kotoka, indigenes are instructed to kidnap three NEDCO staff in retaliation for every one person who will be arrested in connection with Saturday’s disturbances.
Mr. Ibrahim Alhassan Ababa, Public Relations Officer (PRO) for NEDCo hinted that the staff are working in the office but have withdrawn their direct service to the public.
“Should a particular area network develop a fault, there will be a need for staff to move there and fix it, be it a problem with the transformer, pole, and service conductor and even with the meter. Now that staff does not feel safe to move in the community, it will become very difficult for them to attend to faults which constitute a greater part of our daily activities, to that extent, the power supply will be affected, but as it is now, there’s no problem until it develops a fault, that is when we will be required to move in there. But with the issue of withdrawal of service, it will be difficult to get the staff there”, he told Starfm.
Management is not sure when the strike will be called off neither is it confident the police will be able to protect the staff, despite assurances.
“The police, who should be protecting us, had their office vandalized before ours”, Mr. Kotoka said.
Management of NEDCo had an emergency meeting with Northern Regional Security Council and the Deputy Energy Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam yesterday over the development.
