Mahama’s AI against Galamsey is Vote-seeking Gimmick- Ahiagbah

The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has punched holes into John Dramani Mahama’s promise to fight illegal mining activities dominating and destroying country’s reserves with Artificial Intelligence (AI).

According to him, the promise is only aimed at attracting the votes of the masses in the upcoming presidential elections.

Referencing some statements by some senior members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) including Mahama allegedly in favour of illegal mining, he doubted a solution to the fight against menace is possible with them.

“The NDC are promoters of galamsey. Therefore, H.E Mahama’s promise to use AI powered plan to combat galamsey is a vote-seeking gimmick.

“Galamsey is an existential problem that requires inputs from all strata of society to combat. Resolving the galamsey menace is impossible with H.E John Mahama and the NDC because they are promoters and beneficiaries of galamsey.”

AI in Galamsey Fight
Speaking at the third Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale mining organised by the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, the former President who is seeking a comeback promised to utilize advanced technology in the fight against illegal mining popularly known as galamsey which has proven difficult.

“This will include using AI to locate all small-scale mining and galamsey operations, track excavators, and geo-fence all concessions to ensure mining operations are not conducted in unapproved areas, including water bodies,” Joynews quotes him to have said.

“We will introduce and encourage technological innovation to improve capacity for coordinated monitoring of the small-scale mining sector and reduce environmental impact.”
