Mahama Orders the Distribution of Food Held in Warehouses to SHSs

President John Dramani Mahama has moved to resolve challenges with the feeding of students in the country’s various second-cycle institutions.

He has ordered the distribution of all food items in holding in Tema to schools across the country.

The food items were imported by the Akufo-Addo government in response to the drought situation in Northern Ghana last year and are being stored in Tema.

Speaking at the Christian National Thanksgiving Service at the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on January 12, 2025, H.E Mahama said the situation in the schools was an emergency and thereby the order.

He said he had issued a directive to his Chief of Staff to liaise with the Ghana Education Service for the distribution of the items.

“As we speak, we have a challenge currently with feeding students in secondary schools, as the GES insisted that schools must reopen on the 3rd of January, contrary to the advice of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools for a postponement,” he said.

“As a stopgap measure, I have asked the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service to allocate and evacuate food that is currently held in warehouses in Tema.”

Following the reopening of schools by students in the Senior High Schools (SHS) two weeks ago, the Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) urged parents provide extra food items for their wards as they were struggling to feed them.

It noted that the only food item available in schools was rice with essentials like oil and maize lacking.
