Mahama Orders Arrest of Forest Reserve Miners

President John Dramani Mahama has issued an order for the arrest and prosecution of persons who may be found mining in the country’s forest reserves.

According to him, his government has not sanctioned any such act and thereby the order to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah and the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Ayine.

“The government has not given any person or group of persons authority to mine in these reserves,” he said during the swearing-in of some nominated Ministers in his government at the Jubilee House on January 30, 2025.

“The Ministers for Lands and Natural Resources, the Interior, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice must take immediate steps to ensure the arrest and prosecution of any person or group of persons mining in forests.”

The order is in response to journalist Erastus Asare Donkor’s report that the government had given the nod for three groups to mine in the Tano Anwia forest reserve.

“As we speak, three groups sanctioned by elements in the new government are still inside the Tano Anwia forest reserve mining illegally and further degrading the forest. This impunity must not be allowed to fester!!”
