Mahama Discusses Galamsey Concerns With Chinese Government

President John Dramani Mahama has engaged the Chinese government about its nationals’ involvement in illegal mining activities known as galamsey across the country.

The menace bedevilling the small-scale mining sector of Ghana featured prominently when Mahama, as part of his trip to China earlier this week, met with the Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Li Qiang, in Beijing on Monday.

The Asian country is committed to assisting in the fight.

“China committed to work with us to implement our preventive policies and regulatory frameworks to fight the menace,” President Mahama reported in a Facebook post.

He also discussed exploring a new blueprint to deepen strategic partnership while welcoming China’s interest in supporting the 24-hour economy initiative, especially through an agriculture co-operation targeting agro processing and value addition.

President Mahama also took advantage of the opportunity to acknowledge China’s continued investment, grants and support to Ghana’s economic and infrastructure development.

“It was a fruitful bilateral meeting and I am looking forward to enhanced diplomatic, trade, investment and cooperation between our countries.

“Ghana is the gateway to Africa, and we look forward to welcoming more Chinese tourists and investors.”
