Mahama Directs School Feeding Programme Secretariat to Add Egg to Meals

President John Dramani Mahama has given an instruction for eggs to be added to the free meals provided for public primary school students.
He said this is aimed at dealing with the issue of excess eggs and the lack of a ready market facing poultry farmers.
Speaking at the launch of the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative on November 12, 2025, in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, he said he had instructed the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) Secretariat to purchase the surplus to feed students.
“We also saw an abundance of eggs which cannot be stored, so I have told the school feeding to add eggs to the meals of students. They will buy the eggs for students’ meals to alleviate the burden on farmers.”
The GSFP, which started in 2005, is an initiative of the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Program (CAADP) Pillar 3, which seeks to enhance food security and reduce hunger in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on hunger, poverty and malnutrition.
It seeks to increase school enrolment, attendance and retention; reduce short-term hunger and malnutrition amongst kindergarten and primary school children; and boost domestic food production.
