Mahama Cares Administrator Inspects Commencement of Cath Lab Construction at KATH

The management of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) has inspected the construction of a modern Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The delegation, comprising representatives from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the construction firm ADB, was welcomed by the hospital’s management team.

The project is on a fast-tracked schedule, with completion expected in three months as stated by the Administrator.

Madam Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator of the Fund while addressing the gathering reaffirmed the Fund’s mission to bridge the gaps in non-communicable disease care across Ghana.

“This Cath Lab at KATH is a direct response to the needs identified in our assessments. We are fast-tracking it because every day without such a facility cost lives. Together with our partners, we are ensuring equitable access to specialized treatment for all Ghanaians” she said.

Stakeholders at the event applauded the initiative, emphasizing its potential to save countless lives by bringing advanced cardiac care closer to patients in the Ashanti Region and northern Ghana.

Speaking at the site, Chief Executive Officer at KATH, Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo expressed deep gratitude.

“This Cath Lab is a game-changer for us. For years, we’ve had to refer critical heart patients to Accra, often with heartbreaking delays. This fast-tracked project will allow us to perform life-saving interventions right here, reducing mortality and easing the burden on families.”

Dr. (Med) Baidoo, commended Mahama Cares for prioritizing this and applauded the three-month timeline which according to him truly demonstrates commitment to saving critical lives.

The Medical Director, Dr. (Med) Kwadwo Sarbeng, added, “The absence of a dedicated Cath Lab has been a major challenge in managing cardiovascular emergencies. With this facility, we can conduct angiograms, angioplasty, and other procedures on-site.”

Once completed, the Cath Lab will serve millions and mark another milestone in the hospital’s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and delivery.
