Mahama Assents to Abolish E-levy, Betting Tax, One Other

President John Dramani Mahama has assented to a list of bills passed by parliament to scrap some ‘nuisance’ taxes introduced by the former government.

The taxes include the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), Betting Tax, and Emissions Tax.

These were among eight bills that were assented to by the President during a ceremony at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Present were the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of State for Government Communication, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, Presidential Advisor on Economy, Seth Terkper and others.

This is in fulfilment of a major campaign promise by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 elections.

The controversial levy which came into force on May 1 was introduced in the 2022 Budget at a rate of 1.75% but was later reviewed to 1.5% before it was finally pegged at 1%.

The Betting Tax, another controversial tax introduced by the previous government came into force on January 3, 2024, with a deduction of a 10% withholding tax at the point of payout from winnings in lotteries, sports betting, and games of chance is governed by the Income Tax Amendment Act 2023, Act 1094.

Meanwhile, the Emissions Levy Act, of 2023 (Act 1112), imposed a levy on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions on internal combustion engine vehicles.
