Mahama Appoints Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as GRA Commissioner

Senior Partner of the KPMG, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong has assumed the role of Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

His appointment was announced in a letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama.

It came hours after Julie Essiam tendered her resignation letter.

A letter from the Presidency read, “His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana in accordance with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 13(1) of the Ghana Revenue Act, 2009 (Act 791) has appointed you as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority…”

The appointment is pending receipt of the Constitutionally required advice of the Governing Board, given in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

Anthony Kwasi Sarpong is the Senior Partner of the KPMG Practice in Ghana, where he provides strategic direction and manages operations to achieve key corporate objectives.

He has 22 years of experience in audit, accounting advisory, corporate recovery, and insolvency, having worked in Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Before his role as Senior Partner, Sarpong was a Partner and Head of Audit at KPMG Ghana, where he also served as the sector lead for Financial Services and Head of Risk Management. His experience spans consumer markets and financial service lines of business, and he has led complex cross-functional engagements for the firm.

Sarpong is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAG), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), and the Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors (GARIA). He holds an MSc. in Financial Risk Management from London Metropolitan University, UK; a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Manchester, UK; and a First Class Honours in Business Administration (Accounting option) from the University of Ghana.

His academic credentials include an MSc in Financial Risk Management from London Metropolitan University, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Manchester, and a First-Class Honours degree in Business Administration (Accounting) from the University of Ghana.
