Liverpool Forward Jota Dies in Car Crash Two Weeks After Wedding

Liverpool and Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota has died alongside his brother, André Silvia after his Lamborghini crashed while overtaking another vehicle in Zamora, Spain.
According to a verbal statement by Guardia Civil cited by BBC, the accident happened when the forward attempted an overtaking and had a tyre blowout in the process.
The car eventually erupted in flames, killing the two occupants at 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora.
It comes only two weeks after Jota, 28, tied the knot with the mother of his three children, Rute Cardoso.
In a statement, Liverpool said it was devastated by the development.
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”
The President of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proenca in a statement expressed his condolences to the bereaved family for the “irreplaceable” loss.
He further said he had asked UEFA for a minute’s silence, this Thursday, before Portugal’s game against Spain in the women’s European Championship.
“The loss of Diogo and Andre represent irreplaceable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything, daily, to honour their legacy.”
