Lawyers Don’t Need To Sit Exam For Licence Renewal- GLC
The General Legal Council (GLC) has provided clarifications to the renewal of licences by lawyers in Ghana.
This comes after the Chief Justice, Kwesi Anin Yeboah was misinterpreted to have said that lawyers will soon sit an exam in order to have their licenses renewed.
In a statement on Monday correcting the report, the GLC dispelled them as “erroneous”.
The CJ during an event for lawyers on Friday, May 5 said, “Lawyers in the country will soon be mandated to complete a minimum of 12-hour professional development programme in a year before the renewal of their licence.”
Interpreting this statement, the GLC stressed that “there was no mention of lawyers being requested to write an examination at all before a renewal of Licence and indeed no such amendment to the law is about to be made”.
It explained, “the requirement for lawyers to complete Continuing Professional Development before the renewal of a practising licence, is a standard requirement in some jurisdiction around the world.”
The Continuing Professional Development, it said, is meant to sharpen the skills of lawyers with recent developments in the Law for the benefit of the clients they serve.
