Lack of Consumer-Centric Approach Plagues PURC, Says CPA Boss
The Executive Director of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Nana Prempeh Okogyeabour, has criticised the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for neglecting consumer interests and prioritising the industry over consumer well-being.
Speaking on Nkwantannanso on May 17, he stated, “PURC, what should Ghanaians do? How will businesses survive? Incomes have remained the same but utility prices keep increasing.”
Nana Prempeh highlighted that the core duty of PURC is to protect the interest of consumers and providers of utility services, but it seems that PURC has been prioritising the industry rather than the well-being of consumers.
He expressed concern over the recent increase in electricity tariffs, stating, “From December to May, there has been a 47% increase in electricity tariffs.”
The Executive Director pointed out that the indicators used to justify the tariff increase have been negative, questioning the need for such a price hike.
He mentioned, “Looking at the first quarter, we complained of the dollar rate which was GHC15 for a dollar, but now the rate is around GHC11 or GHC12. Fuel prices have reduced to the extent that the government is asking transport operators to reduce fares, so why will PURC increase tariffs? We don’t see the justification for this increase.”
The Executive Director emphasised the importance of considering the impact on consumers and the overall economy, urging PURC to adopt a more consumer-centric approach.
He called on PURC to fulfil its duty of protecting the interests of both consumers and providers of utility services.
