Kumasi to Host 2024 Career and Migration Fair
Kumasi has been strategically selected to host this year’s Career and Migration Fair, a youth-centred development programme aimed at equipping Ghanaian youth with relevant skills and training for job creation.
Partners of the programme which has been in place for the past seven years informed the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II about it at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, as they sought his blessings to carry on.
At the Palace where the Awukudae Festival was being observed, His Majesty was taken through the bolts and nuts of the programme by the Partners- which include the German Development Corporation {Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)}; German Embassy in Ghana; and the Wealth and Jobs Agency.
Among the delegation were Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong, a board member of the Wealth and Jobs Agency; H.E. Sivine Jansen, the Deputy Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ghana; Dr Dirk Aßmann, the Country Director for GIZ; Ambassador Ahmed Hassan, the Board Chair of Wealth and Jobs Agency; Kwasi Taylor, the Managing Partner for Wealth and Jobs Agency; and Kwame Afriyie Asafo Adjei, the Project Manager for Wealth and Jobs Agency.
In her speech, the Deputy German Ambassador explained that the programme offers comprehensive technical and vocational training for sustainable jobs for the youth in order to secure their future.
“One of the key areas of the three focus points of our development cooperation is the youth and a prosperous future employment and this we are aiming in collaboration with the government of Ghana to offer good technical and vocational training.
“The other one is to secure future job placement and in this regard, since 2017, GIZ has organised a career and migration fair. This fair has taken place two times in Kumasi and again on the occasion of your 25th Anniversary since the ascension of the throne, we are intending to hold this year’s fair in Kumasi and we have come here today with two requests to seek your permission.”
The media launch of the programme will take place next week while the Fair will be held in mid-October, she said as she sought the nod of His Majesty.
For his part, the Country Director of GIZ outlined digital transformation, entrepreneurship, good governance, renewable energies and sustainable economic development and employment as key focus of his outfit.
“His Majesty plays a very significant role not only in sustaining the cultural heritage of the Asante Kingdom but also in shaping the future, supporting the youth, especially for their own development and to benefit the country. This is the common ground that we share both Giz on behalf of the German Government, and European Union and this is focusing on the youth and our work.”
As part of the annual Fair, the Project Manager for Wealth and Jobs Agency, Kwame Afriyie Asafo Adjei, noted that hundreds of youths are selected and granted training abroad annually.
“We train youth outside the country and then bring them back to work here. Last year, we trained over 200 people who are working in various sectors currently. In the hospitality sector, for example, they learn how to serve meals, cook and run a hotel and come back with the expertise. By the grace of God, all those who were enrolled came back after training. Things are working smoothly.”
His Majesty will be meeting the team this week
