Kumasi Central Prison Hosts Inmates’ Runway Fashion Show

The Kumasi Central Prison has hosted a maiden Inmates’ Runway Fashion Show, an innovative event that blended rehabilitation, creativity, and self-expression in a vibrant display of talent.
Held within the prison yard on December 29, 2025, the colourful event witnessed inmates modeled a wide range of outfits including traditional kente, batik and tie-dye designs, smocks, as well as contemporary casual and formal wear.
Most of the garments were designed and sewn by the inmates themselves as part of ongoing vocational training programmes.
This was done in collaboration with inmates from the Kumasi Female Prison, led by their Officer-in-Charge, CSP Florence Akua Asabea Taylor.
Gracing the occasion were representatives from sister security agencies, politicians, fashion industry stakeholders, philanthropists, and members of the media.
Notable partners included UNIJAY Limited, Horseman Shoes, Starladin, Rash Tailor, Golden Ohemaa’s Collection, House of Kotobre, LOD Creations, AY Joe, and Manuel Clothings and Textiles.
The atmosphere was filled with admiration as each masked model-inmate confidently displayed designs that blended Ghanaian cultural identity with modern aesthetics. The audience responded with resounding applause, particularly for pieces that demonstrated exceptional craftsmanship and creativity.
Speaking at the event, the Officer-in-Charge of the Kumasi Central Prison, DDP James B. Mwinyelle, described the show as a powerful testament to the potential within correctional facilities.
“Today is not about incarceration; it is about capability. This fashion show proves that within these walls lie talents waiting for the opportunity to shine. It reflects our commitment to reform and reintegration,” he stated.
CSP Florence Akua Asabea Taylor commended the inmates for their dedication and resilience, noting that the skills acquired through such initiatives serve as valuable tools for reintegration and sustainable livelihoods after release.
The fashion show formed the grand finale of the Inmates Funfair 2025, which commenced on December 22 and featured a series of recreational and empowerment activities. The programme was organised by the Funfair Committee under the supervision of the Regional Public Relations Officer, CSP Richard Bukari, and DSP Rose Ampofoaa Tweneboah-Koduah as the chairperson for the event.
The maiden Kumasi Central Prison Fashion Show, aligned with the Think Prisons 360 Degrees initiative and its Creative Arts policy, has set a remarkable precedent—redefining public perceptions of incarceration and reinforcing the Service’s commitment to the three Rs: Reformation, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration.
