Korle Bu Dialysis Centre Closure: Hospital Debunks Death of 20 Patients

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has denied claims that 20 of their renal patients have lost their lives this year as a result of shortages of consumables resulting from a $6 million debt to suppliers.

The Management of the hospital in a press statement noted that the allegations are unfounded and acknowledged that the misconception originated from a misinterpreted media flyer. It thus urged the public to disregard the false claims.

The hospital pointed out that their records do not support the claim.
“Firstly, there is no truth to the claim that Korle Bu Teaching Hospital lost 20 renal patients this year because of a shortage of dialysis consumables. We have no record of any deaths during the period of shortages at the Renal Dialysis Unit.”

Debt
On the allegations of debt, it said the hospital does not owe any supplier.

“The Ministry of Health has settled the arrears due to our suppliers. Currently, Korle Bu does not owe GH¢6 million to the supplier as is being falsely alleged.”

Re-opening

The Outpatient Renal Dialysis Centre of the facility was opened on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, following days of shutdown as a result of a shortage of consumables.

It took delivery of some quantity of the consumables, which were airlifted into the country earlier this month but had gotten stuck at the port.

The remaining shipments at the port are in the process of being cleared with the support of the Ministries of Health and Finance, the statement said.
