KNUST Students’ Safety is Paramount – Asantehene

The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has stated that the safety and security of students stand paramount to him.
The Asantehene is therefore content with the institution’s participation in an upcoming African Universities Safety and Security Training.
According to him, it is a step in the right direction.
“The conference is a step in the right direction due to the recent incident on campus. The safety of students remains paramount to me. I need peace on campus… As the school expands, criminal acts also thrive, and so we need robust measures to counter them,” he told the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson.
The VC was at the Palace to inform His Majesty about the institution’s invitation to partake in the security and safety conference.
She told the King of the Asante Kingdom that she will be leading a delegation to participate in the conference next week.
“It will be a training for trainers. When we return, we will train others on what we have learnt.”
Campus Safety
Prof. Dickson assured Otumfuo that the institution was steadily adding layers of security protocols and measures to ensure students’ safety.
According to her, the school continues to expand CCTV camera coverage across the entire campus.
Special Congregation
Prof. Dickson also informed Otumfuo about the postponement of the Special Congregation that was scheduled to take place in March.
She said it could not be held due to the absence of a University Council following the dissolution of the previous one by the government.
“At the beginning of the year, we submitted the University’s activity outline to the Palace, which included a date for the Special Congregation. Though we have formally written about the postponement, we felt it necessary to come in person to inform His Majesty.”
The VC was accompanied by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Asamoah, on a visit to the Manhyia Palace on March 14, 2025.
