KMA Fails to Elect Presiding Member After Two Rounds of Elections

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM) after two rounds of voting held on Thursday.

Two candidates, including the incumbent PM, contested in the election after Isham Alhassan and Kwame Agyemang withdrew their nominations.

Per Section 27 of the Local Governance Act (Act 936), the Presiding Member must be elected by at least two-thirds of Assembly members.

With 66 members in the Assembly currently, a candidate requires a minimum of 44 votes to be elected.

Both candidates failed in both rounds to secure the established threshold.

The incumbent, Patrick Kwame Frimpong, secured 35 votes in the first round and 36 votes in the second round, while his contender, Ernest Baffour Ofori, obtained 24 votes in the first round and 23 votes in the second.

In line with the law, another meeting is expected to be convened within the next 10 days to elect a Presiding Member to chair the Assembly for the next two years.
