KMA Directs Foreigners in Retail Sector to Exit

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has directed all foreign nationals operating retail businesses within the jurisdiction to cease operations.
They are to cease operations by December 9, 2025, it said in an issued statement.
“This directive is intended to prevent any forceful ejection during a joint operation involving Security Agencies, KMA, and GUTA. This measure forms part of ongoing efforts to restore order, ensure compliance with Ghana’s trade regulations, and maintain sanity within the local markets.”
The Assembly counts on the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure peace and the smooth implementation of this directive.
It comes after the Mayor, Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, urged GUTA to suspend its current exercise of locking up shops belonging to foreigners involved in retail trade.
In an engagement, he reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to addressing these concerns within the confines of the law and urged GUTA to prioritise dialogue and collaboration in resolving the matter.
The KMA reports that a committee comprising representatives from the Ghana Immigration Service, Customs Excise and Preventive Service, Ghana Police Service, KMA, Ghana Investment Promotions Council and GUTA has been constituted.
The committee is tasked with ensuring a coordinated and lawful approach to the issue.
