It’s Unfair to Sack Political Civil Servants and Appoint Politicians as Civil Service Heads- CLOGSAG

The Civil Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) has defended its opposition to the appointment of Mr Samuel Adom Botchwey as the Registrar for the Births and Deaths.

The group at a presser indicated that it would be unfair to sanction civil and local government workers who are politically exposed and then appoint a politician as head of the service.

Addressing the press in response to the government’s demand for the legal basis for their request to terminate the appointment, the Executive Secretary of the Association, Isaac Bampoe noted that their strike action was not in opposition to the President’s mandate to appoint.

“While such Government Services are sanctioned and unilaterally have their appointments terminated, it would not be fair for politically exposed persons to be appointed into the Civil Service and the Local Government Service.”

Rather, it noted that their action is to draw attention to a “Supreme Court ruling that emphasises the significance of neutrality, anonymity, professionalism and permanence of the Civil Service and Local Government Services.”

“We wish to state unequivocally that the ongoing strike is not against the authority of the President to appoint persons into the public services as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.”

The National Executive Council of the Association has therefore resolved to continue with the strike action that started last week.

“After deliberating on the request to call off the strike, the National Executive Council was unanimous on the following: that the strike should continue; that the Hon Minister for Labour and Employment launch a roadmap for the resolution of the matter.”
