GLC Suspends Youtuber’s Call To Bar Over “Bad Character” Allegation
The General Legal Council (GLC) has put on hold a Ghanaian Youtuber’s call to the bar after a “concerned citizen” petitioned the Council over her breach of the Ghana School of Law’s Students Code of Conduct.
The Youtuber is identified as Elorm Ababio but is popularly known as Ama Governor.
Reports say she passed the examinations and was sure of getting called to the bar.
A copy of the petition to the GLC by one Hajia Siduri said Ama Governor does not have a “good character”- a basic requirement for a call to the bar- and “should not become a lawyer in Ghana”.
“Ms Ababio can be seen on a widely circulated video of herself and other students damaging the reputation of the school’s lecturers and the entire school. One such video published on her Youtube channel is titled “Ghana School of Law: Does Law Students sleep in class?” It has been viewed by thousands of subscribers to her Youtube account.”
Other things the “concerned citizen” talked about are Ama Governor’s nose piercing and lesbianism.
Per the petition dated October 30, Ama does not deserve to remain in the Ghana School of Law or to be called to the bar.
A letter from the Secretary of the GLC informed Ama about the suspension of her call to the bar which was scheduled for Friday, November 11.
Per the letter dated November 3, a three-member Committee has been constituted to investigate the complaint while her call to the Bar has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
On November 5 during the swearing-in ceremony of the School of Law Students’ Representative Council (SRC) executives, the Director of the School, Mr Yaw Oppong, directed students to submit their social media accounts for review.
“Everybody will have to provide their social media handles. We are going to look at it and you will be monitored in terms of conduct. We are required by law to make recommendations. We don’t want to stampede you.”
He said this was to ensure they don’t compromise on the good conduct required for the call.
Regulation 21(c) of the Legal Profession (Professional and Post-call Law Course) Regulations, 2018 L.I. 2355 states that “A student of the school qualifies to be called to the Bar if that student has … satisfied the Council that the student is of good character.”
A contact number attached to the name of the concerned citizen’s circulating petition on social media has been traced to ace broadcaster and student of the Ghana School of Law, Richard Delay Sky.
But the broadcaster has denied writing the petition.
“My attention has been drawn to a document in circulation in which the author has asked the General Legal Council to investigate a person said to be a student of the Ghana School of Law.
“To avoid doubt, the number displayed is my number, but I DID NOT AUTHOR THE DOCUMENT IN QUESTION. ALSO, I AM NOT CONNECTED TO ANYONE INVOLVED WITH THE SAID DOCUMENT,” he said in a statement.
He added that he has drawn the attention of the relevant authorities to the issue for the appropriate redress.
Meanwhile, another petition under the headline “JUSTICE FOR AMA GOVERNOR” is circulating garnering signatures against the suspension of Ama’s call to the bar.
As of 17 hours ago, the petition had gotten 10,000 signatures.
