Independence Day: Change in Venue Saves Ghana 95% of Estimated ¢20M- Mahama

The President of Ghana, HE John Dramani Mahama, says the country has saved millions of cedis after choosing to scale down on the celebration and change the venue for the annual event.
According to him, the event was estimated to cost the country some ¢20 million if held at the Black Stars Square.
However, he deemed it prudent to scale it down and host the event at the Jubilee House in the face of the economic crisis when all citizens were being called upon to make personal sacrifices for the survival of the country.
“This year, we received estimates of at least ¢ 20 million for holding the event at Independence Square on the same scale as the previous years. In a year when we are calling on all to sacrifice including workers who have graciously accepted the base pay adjustment far below the rate of inflation, it is unconscionable to spend that kind of money on a few hours of celebration.”
Fiscal Prudence
According to him, the decision is aimed at affirming the government’s commitment to fiscal prudence.
“By reducing the scale of the event, we wish to demonstrate a commitment to fiscal responsibility and the efficient use of our limited resources.
“Fiscal prudence has become imperative for navigating the severe economic crisis that has recently confronted our country.”
Benefit
He noted that the move had saved the country over 90% of the estimated cost.
“Today’s event will save us 95% of the estimated cost of the event.”
HE Mahama noted that large-scale celebration is accompanied by significant logistical security and infrastructure costs which strain the national budget.
“The state spent ¢15 million on last year’s celebration in Koforidua and spent ¢13.7 million on the previous year’s celebration in Ho in the Volta Region.”
Significance of Celebration
He further posited that the scale-down in no way downplays the significance of the auspicious day.
“This scaled-down celebration does not diminish the importance and significance of this occasion in any way…This day must always be celebrated but when reality calls for a different approach, we must heed it and act accordingly.”
At the event held on March 6, 2025, were the Former President of Tanzania, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the Guest of Honour, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and others.
