I’m not Campaigning for Running Mate Position – Majority Leader

The Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Hon Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu says he is not involved in any campaign for the position of a running mate in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This follows an admonition from the Former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu that the Majority Leader must be focused on his oversight responsibility as the leader of government business in Parliament than campaigning to be the running mate to the flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Reacting to a similar comment from the Minority Chief Whip, Governs Agbodza in his debate on the 2024 Budget, Mr Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu shot down assertions of being in a contest for the position of a running mate.

“Mr Speaker, yesterday my colleague the former minority leader was saying that I  am concentrating on my running mate campaign. Mr Speaker, let me state clearly that there is no contest for the position of a running mate and I am not involved in campining for running mate position and it should be loud and clear,” he stated.

The Majority leader further cautioned members of the minority not to involve themselves in conjectures by assumption.

He drew the speaker’s attention to order 93(3) which talks about the relevance and also conduct of members of parliament, especially, throwing wild allegation against a fellow member.

The Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Alban Bagbin upheld the objection raised by the majority leader and advised members.

“Hon members, the majority leader is right. His name was mentioned but he is not in contest and the issue of relevance is important.” he stated.
