I’ll Always Stand For Truth; Asantehene on Disputes Involving His Wives
The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is determined to stand by the truth in the adjudication of disputes involving all persons including his traditional wives.
Referred to as “Aheneyere” in the local dialect, these female leaders are successors to wives who were taken by Occupants of the Golden Stool and enstooled as Queens in selected areas across Asanteman.
They are recognized as the ceremonial wives of successive Kings of the Asante Kingdom per tradition and customs.
At a New Year luncheon organized by Lady Julia Osei Tutu, the wife of the current Asantehene for her co-wives on January 5, 2025, Otumfuo urged them to be circumspect in their dealings.
He warned that he would throw them under the bus and stand for the truth always just as in the case of Agyaponmaa.
“For sure you will have my support but you know that I will uphold the truth always. No matter the love I have for you, I will stand by the truth. Asantehene sacrificed Agyaponmaa his wife, wrapped her bead around his gun and went with it to war. I will plead with you to lead honourably… I will work on your land disputes. If your predecessors gave out land and you decide to retake it, I won’t allow that.”
Otumfuo further urged them to exercise patience as he worked on their pending cases before him.
“A lot of disputes are before me. Cases of Asanteman are enormous so don’t worry when your cases take long but you also know that when I sit on your cases, I do a lot. Let’s all be patient. Whatever needs to be done for peace to reign will be done.”
