IGP: We Won’t Accept “Most Corrupt” Tag

The Inspector-General of the Ghana Police Service, Dr George Akufo Dampare has refused to accept that his institution is the most corrupt in Ghana as established by researchers.

Speaking at a lecture at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Ghana Police boss conceded that the service is infiltrated by some corrupt persons, however, he affirmed that the service can’t accept the tag given by GSS and other researching agencies.

“We’ve not said there are a couple of people who are corrupt. We are not saying that. We are doing all that we can to handle it but we will never accept the tag that we are the most corrupt institution in the country”, he said.

Dampare stressed that the methodology of those researches is questionable therefore making the findings “unfounded”.

He noted that “All those researches have challenged methodology. At the appropriate time, we will keep responding to them”

However, he noted that hands are on deck to distil the service from all impurities.

“We will keep working at the things that people over the years have used against us to make us feel so unforgettable when it comes to the issue of corruption…we will get there. I can assure you”.

In July 2022, the Ghana Statistical Service together with the Commission on Human Rights Administration Justice (CHRAJ) and the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime released the findings of a survey that found the Ghana Police Service to be the most corrupt among some twenty-four institutions in the country.

This was followed by an Afrobarometer survey by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) which also found the Service to be the most corrupt in the country.
