If E-Levy Was Bad, D-Levy Is Catastrophic- Asenso Boakye

The Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency, Francis Asenso Boakye, has opined that the fuel levy known as D-levy is catastrophic if the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) was “bad”.

Comparing the two levies, he claimed E-Levy, introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration, was an ‘optional’ digital transaction tax and a ‘progressive’ tool used to widen their tax nets, while, the D-levy by the Mahama administration is a blanket tax on fuel with direct and harsh consequences on everyone.

According to him, the latter will lead to rising transportation fares, food prices, and inflation.

The lawmaker, therefore, blasted Civil Society Organisations for openly condemning the now-scrapped E-levy and remaining mute over the newly introduced D-levy.

“If E-Levy was ‘bad’, D-Levy is catastrophic. And the silence is complicity…The NDC and their civil society allies launched a full-blown propaganda campaign, branding it as anti-poor and insensitive; even when it was designed to broaden financial inclusion and reduce our dependence on external borrowing for infrastructure investments.”

“This is the height of political deceit; a desperate bid for power that fed on populism and false promises. The Mahama administration knew the truth but chose to mislead the public, vilifying a better alternative (E-Levy) just to win votes, only to turn around and impose a heavier burden on the very people they claimed to be fighting for.”
