I Will Never Be MP for Keta – Afenyo-Markin Clarifies After Volta Homecoming

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has dismissed rumours suggesting he intends to contest the Keta parliamentary seat—whether as an independent candidate or on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Effutu MP reassured residents and stakeholders, including the current MP for Keta, that his presence in the constituency is purely development-driven and not politically motivated.
“I’m not also preparing myself to be an independent candidate for Keta. It will never happen. I will never contemplate being an MP for this area.”
Addressing a durbar at Tsiame in the Keta Constituency in the Volta Region during a homecoming on Thursday, April 17, the Minority Leader explained that his visit was inspired by a desire to give back to the communities tied to his roots.
As part of his support, Afenyo-Markin presented 200 hair dryers and sewing machines to empower women in the area.
He stressed that the gesture was not merely a donation, but a declaration of intent.
He said, “We are here to ignite a flame of opportunity, to weave a future of economic development, and to reaffirm our collective commitment to the empowerment of the women who are the backbone of this community.”
Reflecting on his heritage, he said: “My mom is a Fanti woman from Winneba. And my dad is an Anlo man from Tsiame and Nyekonope. So it’s my own little contribution for the parents who brought me to life — mom and dad. I’ve chosen to be an MP on my mother’s side. Choice I’ve made.”
He also emphasized the importance of unity, urging the community to look beyond politics and focus on development.
“We are here to support our brother and the community. And so shall it remain. We want all of us to be together as one family.”
While reaffirming his commitment to Effutu, Afenyo-Markin said he remains open to supporting initiatives in Nyekonope and the wider Volta Region when appropriate.
His comments come in response to growing speculation and social media chatter suggesting he was preparing to shift his political base to Keta following his recent return to Tsiame and philanthropic activities in the area.
