I Tried to Harm Myself Countless Times After My Mom’s Death- Maame Serwaa

Ghanaian actress Clara Amoateng Benson popularly known as Maame Serwaa has disclosed that hostility and accusation that targeted her immediately after her mother’s death in 2017 created suicidal thoughts in her.
In an interview with Emelia Brobbey, she spilt that she was compelled on several occasions to harm herself after she experienced hostility rather than empathy even from close friends.
She said negative commentaries suggested she was involved in her mother’s death and fueled thoughts that made her feel she was not a good human deserving to live.
“After losing her, I heard people accuse me of being behind her death, I was hurt. Consider the fact that I am just a normal child, my mom had not yet been buried and people were making all sorts of videos to make these claims. They were much older than I was.”
“I tried to harm myself on so many occasions,” the 25-year-old said to the surprise of her colleague in the industry.
According to her, the hatred was so much that her phone was seized for some time in order to protect her from the toxins that targeted her on the internet.
“I got my phone back a month after the final funeral rites.”
She said the experience contributed to shaping her more into an introvert, distancing herself from friends.
“Even though I was not too special, I felt I needed consolation and empathy more than ever…The painful part is that some people who were closer to me questioned me. They were like ‘We’ve heard this, is it true?’ That broke my relationship with friends and subsequent ones. I now move solo. It’s from my experience.”
