I Opposed Initial Plans To Name Kumasi International Airport After Me- Otumfuo
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the 16th King of the Asante Kingdom, deemed it inappropriate to accept request to name the Kumasi International Airport after himself.
It was the year of his Silver Jubilee and the government thought it only befitting to immortalise him for his distinguished, unmatched and impactful leadership by naming the airport after him.
However, when he was informed, the insightful King vehemently opposed the idea and insisted the facility get named after the 13th Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Sir Agyeman Prempeh I.
His Majesty made this disclosure during a visit by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) on November 20, 2024.
He explained, “There is a British house at the airport where Nana used to take some rest when he was on leave. This was after he returned from exile. You decided to put my name on the airport but I opposed to preserve the contribution of Nana to Asanteman.”
Otumfuo also announced plans to turn the house of Prempeh I at Airport into a Museum to immortalise his memory.
“I have told the Minister I will be working on the house to prepare it as a Museum. All his furniture in there will be kept there to save his memory.”
The Prempeh I International Airport was commissioned in May 2024.
