I May Drop Treason Charge Against Barker after Docket Study- A-G

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Ayine, says he will be perusing the treason felony docket of social activist Oliver Baker-Vormawor, to determine whether to continue the case against him or not.

Speaking to the media after his swearing-in by President John Dramani Mahama, he said his study of the docket will inform his next step.

The decision he will take, he said, will be at his discretion.

“With respect to the charges against Oliver, I will definitely study the docket. The statement that he made is one that was made in the media. The docket has been built and I will study the docket and based on my own opinion of whether or not they are trumped-up charges I may drop the charges.

“I’m not going to stand here and assure you that I’m definitely going to drop the charges not having read the docket and come to an opinion as to whether or not the charges were properly laid and should be dropped.”

In February 2022 Oliver Barker-Vormawor was arrested for making a social post the state deemed treasonable.

He posted, “If this E-Levy passes after this cake bullshit, I will do the coup myself. Useless Army!”

Treason is an offence provided for in section 182(b) of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act and is defined as where a person “prepares or endeavours to carry out by unlawful means any enterprise which usurps the executive power of the State in any matter of both a public and a general nature”.

Last week, the High Court scheduled Monday, February 17, 2025, to empanel a new jury for the trial of Fix The Country convenor.
