I Don’t Understand Why NPP Has Sidelined Me- Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed his dissatisfaction with how the New Patriotic Party (NPP) chose to sideline him in all matters and activities of the party after his exit from power.

In an interview, he admitted he felt offended by the action of the party he brought to power after it had stayed in opposition for almost 30 years.

He believes the party could have at least kept him informed if it was not interested in seeking his counsel.

“From January 1972, when Acheampong overthrew us, we didn’t come to power again until 2001 when I brought the party to power for two terms. How did we get here? There are offences. How come I have been ignored? I don’t understand.”

The former President noted that his health had not deteriorated to the point where he could not reason to deserve such treatment.

“Do you think I have deteriorated to the point where I say I haven’t eaten when food is in my mouth? I have not gotten to that stage and so at least keep me informed. I heard you were doing something and I was like ‘Am I no longer a party member?’ I am just watching you from afar.”

He further recollected the ordeal he went through alongside other founding members to position the party in its present status.

“If you trace Ghana’s political history. It was UGCC but you’ll find we never won power from 1947 to 1969. In 1969 during the Busia era, I was 30 years old. I was a member of Parliament. I was a founding member of the Progress Party.

“Busia appointed me as a Deputy Foreign Minister. Acheampong overthrew us. Before I realized it, I was in jail. I spent one year and three months in prison. How many of those making noise today have been detained.”
