I Considered Ghana But Want to Play for England- Kobbie Mainoo
Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo says he considered Ghana in his national choice but had to go for the one that has held a special place in his heart when the opportunity presented itself.
Speaking at a presser ahead of England’s game against Denmark on June 20, the footballer of Ghanaian descent, said he is happy with his current choice which has always been his dream despite boasting of his pride in his heritage.
“I’m obviously proud of my Ghanaian heritage and all those speculations on what not. It’s always been a dream to play for England so I’m happy to be here.”
Asked if he took a serious view of Ghana’s quest for him, he said, “Considered though but I want to play for England”.
Kobbie had been on Ghana’s list with hope of convincing him to play for the Black Stars some time ago; however, that hope was dashed after he responded to a call by Gareth Southgate for a friendly game between England and Belgium in March 2024.
The 19-year-old is currently in Germany helping his country of birth to claim their first UEFA European Championship after coming close to it in 2020.
He featured in their opener which ended 1-0 against Serbia on June 16 after he replaced Jude Bellingham- who got the sole goal- in the 86th minute of the game.
