I Apologise; Barker-Vormawor to Vetting Committee

Social activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has rendered an unqualified apology to the Appointments Committee of Parliament following his social media post that was deemed contemptuous.
He appeared before the Committee on January 29, 2025, following his summons and admitted to posting: “So all the monies the ministerial appointees are being asked to pay to the Appointments Committee just to get approved, are those ones not affected by ORAL? Strange Republic”.
The lawyer by profession, however, clarified that his post was not aimed at disparaging the officials and thereby apologized as he used the occasion to express his highest regard and respect for the Committee, citing his past social media posts about it.
“I want to begin by reiterating my utmost respect for the Committee and its constitutional role and the task it has to vet persons to high offices in this country… At no point did I accuse the Chair or members of this committee of having asked for or to be given money or to submit themselves to ORAL. It is in fact on record that I have praised the Chair of this Committee for his leadership.”
“My post was not intended to disparage members of the committee and I have not intended to say that members of this committee have received bribes from various individuals. At no point was my statement intended the same and for those reasons I apologise,” he added.
He further committed to taking down the social media post.
On his reason for not earlier taking down the controversial post, he said, “I did contemplate it”, however, he noted that it was kept for reference.
“The words had been twisted and that it became imperative on me that I maintained the original form that if I was questioned on it, reference could be made to verify it. This was the reason why it was not deleted.”
