Arrest
He was arrested on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 by the Police after honouring an invitation and got detained overnight at the Ministries Police Station.
Video circulating on social media of his arrest on Thursday morning showed him handcuffed and in the process of being conveyed to court with supporters of Movement for Change demanding his release as some say the arrest is politically motivated.
The supporters some of whom are said to have spent the night at the police station were captured in one viral video in their yellow branded T-shirts enthusiastically chanting “freedom” as they watched on.
Background
The controversial politician’s arrest is connected to a comment he made in an interview to the effect that he influenced the low turn-out of electorates in the Volta Region in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 General election while he was a member.
In the interview which has gone viral, Hopeson said he got some dynamites three days to the election and led their detonation in parts of the Volta region- a stronghold of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)- to scare electorates from going out to vote.
“Three days to the election, we went to get some dynamites and detonated them. Not many went to cast their votes on the day of the election…The voter turnout in Volta Region reduced drastically. After voting in Tema, I drove there… Some polling stations with about 500 voters had only 170 people turning out as of 2pm.”
