High Court Throws Out Randy Abbey’s Defamation Case against Abronye

A Criminal High Court has thrown out a defamation suit by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Randy Abbey.

The presiding judge, Justice Halima Abdul Baasit, cited procedural defects for the decision.

He explained that the alleged defamatory statement was made against the reputation of a specific individual.

“Although the said Publication were made against the Defendant with respect to his current position as the CEO of COCOBOD, but COCOBOD is not a named party in this instant suit as to warrant the Legal Department to issue the Instant Writ with the Legal Director of COCOBOD being Counsel for the Plaintiff.”

The judge therefore found it procedurally defective for the legal team of COCOBOD to represent Randy in the case.

“The Plaintiff, having sued in his personal capacity, ought to procure the service of a private legal practitioner to represent him. I therefore find the instant Writ of Summons and Statement of Claim as procedurally defective, and the same is dismissed. There shall be no orders as to cost.”

In August 2025, Randy initiated legal action against the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, for certain broadcasts or publications that are defamatory and injurious to his hard-earned reputation.
