GTEC Revises Mature Students Entry Requirements

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has revised the entry requirements for mature students into tertiary education institutions across the country.
In a statement, it said the move is to ensure transparent, fair, and consistent admission of mature applicants; maintain academic standards across institutions; regulate mature student intake to align with national tertiary education guidelines; and ensure adherence to the Admission Quota.
The new policy takes effect immediately, it noted, warning that failure by an institution to comply with this policy will result in the withdrawal of all admitted applicants who do not meet the requirements stated in this policy, as well as withdrawal of accreditation for the programmes to which such applicants were accepted.
It said it also reserves its rights to apply other appropriate penalties as stipulated under PART ONE of the Tertiary Education Act, 2020 (Act 1023) to any non-complying institution.
Quota
Under the new measures, the number of mature applicants admitted in any given academic year must not exceed five percent (5%) of the institution’s total admissions for that year.
Eligibility
As part of the conditions, the applicant must be at least 25 years old at the time of application with five years of working experience in the relevant discipline.
It noted that the age must be proved through a birth certificate or any other legitimate documentary evidence.
In addition, the applicant must either have at least E in three core subjects (including English Language and Mathematics) plus three relevant elective subjects in SSSCE or WASSCE.
Entrance Examinations
Applicants must also pass the institution’s Mature Students’ Entrance Examinations in English Language, Mathematics and Aptitude Test.
“For institutions under mentorship, the entrance examinations must be moderated by the Mentor Institution and marked scripts must be vetted by the Mentor Institution.
Alternative to Entrance Examinations
In lieu of sitting for the Mature Students’ Entrance Examinations, applicants may present proof of credit passes in English Language and Mathematics in WASSCE or any other nationally recognised high-school level examination (for applicants from countries outside the WAEC system).
